35. History of the Egyptian Obelisks

The obelisk, called Tejen in the sacred language of the ancient Egyptians, was a term which was synonymous with "protection" or "defense." The needle of stone had the function of perforating the clouds and dispersing negative forces that always threaten to accumulate, in the form of visible storms or invisible ones, and was placed over the temple as a symbol of a petrified ray. The word "Obelisk" comes from the Greek obeliskos, meaning a prong for roasting.

37. Poynton Egypt Group

Poynton Egypt Group was founded in summer 1993 by a group of enthusiastic people sharing a common interest in Egyptology. Since those early days, the group has grown from strength to strength. We have ten meetings per year, including social events at mid-summer and winter. Not only do we have meetings in Poynton, but we visit museums around Britain that have Egyptological collections.
We produce newsletters twice a year, which are sent to members.
We have speakers from other societies as well as from Egyptological institutions around the country. We have even organised trips to the monuments of Egypt itself!

People have always been fascinated by the Ancient Egyptians. From their preoccupation with death, The Pyramids of Giza were tombs for these pharaohs and The Great Sphinx still guards them today. The surviving monuments have stood for thousands of years and many projects undertaken to restore these great monuments to their former glory. The Egyptians are so proud of their monuments that a project to relocate the four gigantic statues of Ramses was undertaken as a result of the new flood level of Lake Nasser, which was created by the High Dam, threatened them. Ramses himself would have been proud of this project and the restoration involved.

How much attention was paid to the feet in ancient Egypt? What exactly were Egyptians doing to feet? Could it be that artifacts show that we are doing the same things to feet today? At least four clues have survived from ancient times to provide some answers to such questions. Three bas-relief carvings and a report from an ancient historian provide illustrations of Egyptian footwork.
