The international computer driving license
Link ID 6732
Title The international computer driving license
Url http://www.icdlcasbec.org.eg
Description The ECDL (European Computer Driving License) concept originated in Finland in 1998 and has spread all over Europe since then, with headquarters in Dublin (Ireland). The success of ECDL in Europe as the defector standard in basic IT training and certification has led to the generation of the concept of the International Computer Driving License (ICDL). This license is equivalent to the ECDL but with an international outlook. Both certificates are now internationally accepted in each of the member countries. The ECDL/ICDL operates under the auspices of, and in association with, the National Computer Society (NCS) in England. ECDL/ICDL Foundation currently operates the Program in 31 countries worldwide, with one million registrants already under its belt. To operate ICDL worldwide, the Foundation licenses a national/regional Licensee to use the concept and establish its program. The UNESCO Cairo Office (UCO) is the designated Licensee for the operation of the ICDL Program in Egypt and its neighboring countries.
The ICDL program is comprised of 7 modules. On enrolling for an ICDL course, candidates are issued with an ICDL logbook. This logbook looks like a passport and is issued in the UK. Each time the candidate passes an exam for a certain module he/she is issued a stamp on the logbook. The candidate may wish to take all 7 modules or any. The modules can be studied and tested in any order. The test for each module is 45-minutes long. All tests, except that of Module 1, are practical hands-on tests at the computer. Module 1 is the only one requiring a written test. Having completed all modules successfully the candidate is rewarded with an ICDL certificate that is recognized worldwide.
ICDL is for everybody with basic understanding of English and computer terminology, anyone can register to obtain the certification. Regardless of age, education, and background CASBEC will run a free assessment session for candidates who are not sure about their qualifications.

? ICDL is a flexible program that allows you to take the exams when you want in whatever order you wish.
? If at first you don?t succeed try and try again". With ICDL this is possible since the candidates can redo the exams until they succeed in obtaining the certificate

ESA is a non Governmental Organization (N G O) founded in 1996 representing the software industry in Egypt and the common interests of its members who are software companies, individual programmers, software related services companies and all those who are ready to support the industry in different ways.

Throughout the past few years the Egyptian software industry witnessed dramatic change. The number of companies doubled many times, the variety of products increased to include all fields, the number of computer users grew more, computers were introduced in all levels of the educational system, both public and private sectors started to go through the automation process. As a result of all these changes, the software industry started to flourish and contacts with international markets through exhibitions, Internet, and international companies branches got the whole society into momentum. More software products were introduced to the market trying to fulfill the continuous demand that got Egypt into focus of international market once more.

As the Egyptian software industry grows, gets more contributors, gets more weight, as one of the strategic industries, the desire to consolidate efforts grows more, and the need for an entity to organize various activities in this field becomes a must.
It is the world?s main concern now, market needs are growing faster locally and regionally, and we have got the necessary expertise capable of complying with these needs.

Since ESA is an entity representing the industry, it has set its aims for promoting the Egyptian software industry to play its role in developing the overall national economy through the following actions:
1- Establish well equipped centers to graduate generations capable of coping with new technologies in the software field. Also to enhance capabilities of current staff in software companies.
2- Handling necessary studies and researches in technical and marketing aspects off software market.
3- Holding local and international seminars and conferences necessary to promote the industry and keeping the society updated with latest IT information.
4- Coordinating with international bodies and associations in order to exchange experience and accordingly enhance performance levels.
5- Promoting export and international marketing for Egyptian software through contribution in local and international exhibitions. Founding scientific institutes in cooperation with responsible government exhibition.
6- Founding scientific institutes in cooperation with responsible governmental authorities.
7- Publishing a specialized magazine that includes latest news, researches and studies in the field of software.
8- Raising funds from local and international donors working on the development of software industries and related human resources in order to support various activities in this field.

On the way to achieve these goals, the association members, as the nucleus for a giant industry, are joining forces to promote Egypt?s position as a major play in markets as a target. We believe that we have got all the elements necessary to get such a position, and we have to work hard on consolidating these elements and using them to overcome and obstacles.
